Black Women in Menopause

We often hear about different countries experiences of menopause and I learnt more about this when being part of M Boldened, the publication supporting global voices on menopause.

I was thrilled to chat with Nina Kuypers about menopause in the Black community, Nina is based in the UK and we both chat here about how little awareness is being raised in society and in the media in relation to diversity when it comes to menopause.

Nina chats about the lack of discussion about perimenopause and menopause in ethnic communities and the variations and differences that individual communities experience.

I love how open Nina is about her own experience and the work we need to do to help all women. It’s conversations like this that reinforce my passion for making this a societal conversation.

Nina chats openly about her drying hair, products that don’t support minorities, the lack of information when she started perimenopause. We also chat about Type 2 Diabetes and how prevalent this is within the black community.

It’s going to be very exciting watching Nina’s work in this space in the UK and I would love to hear from women in ethnic communities in Ireland as I am passionate about supporting all women through this life transition.

The take home : We are all different, having education and informed choices are essential.

Make every contact count, teach one women, reach another.
